Working out is hard enough and can be overwhelming when starting out. However, if you are doing exercises that you dislike, the chances of adherence are very low. The key to continuing is to find something that you love. Try different activities until you find something that you like. Fitness should be fun and not feel like a chore (although sometimes that might happen). Don’t be afraid to mix things up and try new things! 💪
Here are some different workouts that beginners can try (there are certainly TONS more! Doing a little Google search could uncover activities that you didn’t even know existed!):
- Walking or jogging – you don’t have to limit yourself to the treadmill! Walking or jogging outside can be mentally calming because you have so many things to see! Find a cool trail to walk/run and enjoy looking at nature. Sometimes a change of scenery can make all the difference.
- Bodyweight exercises (a great place to start when wanting to strength train. You can do squats, good mornings, push-ups, lunges, planks, etc.)
- Yoga, Pilates, Barre – These are great for strength & flexibility. Slow flow yoga is great if you need something relaxing, but also want to move your body.
- Cycling – great to do indoors on a stationary bike or (my favorite) outside on a regular bike.
- Swimming -Best way to beat the summer heat!
- Strength Training – important for your wellbeing. Helps to build muscle, strong bones, and a plethora of benefits!
- Dance (i.e. Zumba, hip hop, etc.) – my favorite kind of cardio! Even better when you are in a group or with your friends.
- Group Fitness Classes (sometimes these might be easier to start with because you have other people to socialize with and motivate you. Some examples are kickboxing, bootcamps, spin classes, etc.) – These are great, especially if it’s your first time at a gym. You can find a beginner class, which will have a lot of “first-timers”. It’s a great way to not only meet people, but also exercise.
- HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) – you can start with low-impact intervals and then increase intensity. These can be done on your own, or in a group setting. There are many HIIT type classes that you can join.
These are some of the fun ways that I workout. It’s always better with friends!
In conclusion, the journey to finding your ideal workout as a beginner is all about finding what you love. There are tons of options available – from walking to dancing – there’s something for everyone. The key is to stay adventurous and try things that you have never done. You never know, it might become your new favorite! Although, no matter what you choose, it’s important to listen to your body. Remember, fitness is not a one-size-fits-all journey, so enjoy the process and discover what makes you feel happy, energized, and strong. Keep moving until you find your perfect workout!
